Why Zimbabwe Said "No" to $367 Million Simultaneously, President Emmerson Mnangagwa (ED) has made waves by withdrawing from a proposed $367 million health funding agreement with the United States.

While the U.S. Embassy warned that this would "wind down" support for 1.2 million people on HIV treatment, the Zimbabwean government cited three major reasons for the rejection:

Data Sovereignty: The U.S. reportedly requested "comprehensive access" to Zimbabwean health and virus data without reciprocal sharing.

Mineral Links: Negotiators hinted at attempts to link health aid to "critical mineral" access (lithium), which Harare viewed as an infringement on national interests.

Local Independence: The government maintains that Zimbabwe is now prepared to sustain its own HIV and malaria responses independently.
