The Zimbabwe Republic Police has started a countrywide operation to restore order on the roads. If you are driving a vehicle without number plates or have added illegal lights you must take action now. As of March 10 2026 the police are targeting all vehicles. This includes private cars and company vehicles and government vehicles that are breaking the law.

Why is this happening

The police have noticed several dangerous trends. Some motorists remove plates to commit crimes like robbery and kidnapping without being identified. Plateless vehicles are also being used to drive against the flow of traffic or ignore red lights. Additionally many private cars are using blue lights and sirens that are only for emergency services. These lights can blind other drivers at night.

What to Expect at Police Checkpoints

The police will not accept any excuses. If you are caught your vehicle will be impounded immediately. Your car will only be released once you have the proper registration plates attached to the vehicle. If you have illegal sirens or bar lights the police will remove them on the spot.

How to Stay Safe and Compliant

If you are driving a newly imported car get your permanent plates as soon as possible. Do not use temporary cardboard signs. If you have added LED bar lights or flashing emergency lights you should take them off now. These are only for police and ambulances. Please ignore rumors on social media and follow only official police updates.

A Final Word

This operation is about keeping everyone safe. Driving a vehicle that cannot be identified makes the community vulnerable. Check your vehicle today. If it is not legal do not drive it.
