ZiG notes coming April 7.

The Rollout Schedule According to Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) Governor Dr. John Mushayavanhu, the timeline was designed to allow for a transition period and public awareness campaigns:

April 5, 2024: The ZiG was officially introduced in the Monetary Policy Statement, replacing the Zimbabwean dollar (ZWL).

April 8, 2024: The ZiG became the official unit of account, and online banking systems began converting ZWL balances to ZiG.

April 30, 2024: Physical banknotes and coins were released into the economy for public use.

Transition Period: Citizens were given 21 days from the initial announcement (until approximately April 26, 2024) to convert their old ZWL cash into ZiG.

Denominations and Availability While eight denominations were originally designed, the RBZ opted for a staggered release to manage economic stability:

Circulating Banknotes: The ZiG10 and ZiG20 were the first notes to enter wide circulation.

Circulating Coins: The ZiG1, ZiG2, and ZiG5 were issued as coins to ensure "change" was available and to prevent price inflation on small goods.

Postponed Notes: The release of ZiG50, ZiG100, and ZiG200 notes was intentionally delayed by the RBZ to avoid fueling inflationary pressures.
